Director of Development and Communications: Full-time Staff Member

Organization Description

The mission of National Student Partnerships is to direct the energy and innovation of young people toward ensuring that all community members have access to the services, opportunities, and attention that they need to pursue employment, self-sufficiency, and personal success. NSP currently runs programs in 12 sites across the country, and has engaged over 3,000 students and served over 20,000 clients since its founding.

Position Description

NSP seeks an independent, intelligent, and driven leader to direct the daily operations of its Development and Communications Department, supervising a team of four full-time Development and Communications Associates. Working closely with the CEO and Board of Directors, the Director of Development and Communications will be responsible for structuring and executing NSP’s annual revenue strategy. NSP currently has a budget of $2 million with plans for substantial growth in the next five years.

The Director will oversee the maintenance of all funding leads developed by the CEO, ensuring effective relationship cultivation. The Director will also identify and secure new funding opportunities for NSP, positioning the organization to meet its annual revenue targets.

Specific responsibilities will include:

Diversify and significantly grow NSP funding base

  • Help to identify, cultivate, and secure support from:
    • Venture philanthropy and foundations
    • Corporations, developing NSP’s sponsorship program and increasing the percentage secured through corporate support
    • Public/government funding
    • High net worth individuals
    • Students, alumni, and other participants in NSP’s program
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential funders and partners
  • Prepare presentations and write/edit proposals for funding
  • Manage follow-up correspondence with current and potential funders
  • Write and submit reports to funders
  • Track all donor information and communications using NSP’s Donor Management System, SAGE
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance and Operations to manage revenue goals and report on monthly revenue flow
  • Contribute insights into NSP’s tracking and impact measurement system to ensure appropriate and dynamic metrics are presented to funders

Grow NSP’s individual donor base

  • Identify high net worth individuals for CEO to develop
  • Ensure that individual donors feel valued and appreciated
  • Develop and implement methods for recognition and stewardship of donors in order to move them up the development ladder to increase and deepen their commitment
  • With the CEO:
    • Work with individual members of the Board of Directors to determine annual contributions to NSP’s fundraising plan
    • Support the Board of Directors’ fundraising efforts

Manage NSP’s event program

  • Supervise Development Associate assigned to event planning
  • Oversee successful execution of annual NSP fundraising events in multiple cities
  • Develop strategy to increase amount raised through events and organization’s visibility within each city

Oversee Communications and Public Relations

  • Supervise Communications Associate
  • Manage publication of NSP’s bi-annual newsletter and annual Impact Report
  • Oversee maintenance and development of NSP’s website (www.nspnet.org)
  • Oversee ongoing enhancement of NSP’s materials, including the development of donor specific brochures
  • Identify and capitalize on opportunities for media attention
  • Develop organization’s capacity to seek out public relations opportunities

Support growth of NSP Alumni Association (NSP-AA)

  • Encourage alumni participation in funding efforts
  • Expand NSP’s long-term tracking mechanisms for alumni

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Commitment to NSP’s mission and belief that students and young people offer crucial skills necessary to improving America’s social services system and strengthening this country’s communities
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree encouraged; minimum 5-7 years of work experience, including at least three years of directly relevant professional experience
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Strong fundraising experience in donor relations, proposal writing, and general development operations management
  • Communications experience including knowledge of PR and brand management and ability to develop strategic messaging
  • Familiarity with Donor Management Systems
  • Proven managerial success
  • The ability to effectively train and groom Development and Communications Associates on proposal work, writing, publications creation, donor communications, event planning, etc. Applicants should feel comfortable in a management role including making difficult decisions and conveying complicated and/or difficult information in an honest manner
  • The ability to run workshops and create fundraising learning modules for students and alumni

Program Associate/AmeriCorps*VISTA – Full Time

Program Associate/AmeriCorps*VISTA – Full TimeNational Student Partnerships(NSP) is currently seeking motivated and enthusiastic individuals to serve as the AmeriCorps*VISTA Program Associates in NSP’s National Office in Washington, DC.  Program Associates substantially contribute to NSP’s growth and progress by offering critical support to the National Office staff, as well as the organization’s twelve Local Offices across the country.  As one of the three Program Associates, you will have the opportunity to gain critical insight into the inner-workings of a non-profit organization, develop valuable professional skills, and play a central role in the daily operations and management of a national organization.

Program Associates must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, impeccable written and oral communication skills, and have the ability to work effectively both independently and with a team. Like NSP’s staff members, Program Associates must be committed to the philosophy that college and university students have tremendous talents and unique capabilities that can and should be harnessed to make significant contributions to their surrounding communities. 

Responsibilities Will Include the Following:

The three Program Associates will function as a cohesive unit, contributing to the programmatic initiatives of the National Office, and providing support to each other’s specific work plans. Together, the PA team will be responsible for: compiling best practice documents to be disseminated to Local Offices, conducting monthly Site Coordinator conference calls to promote communication between the Local Offices, assisting with Development work in the National Office, and supporting the larger Program and National Office Teams.

Furthermore, each Program Associate will be responsible for individual work plans. The three areas of focus are Recruitment, Trainings and Event Planning, and Evaluation and Strategic Development.

Recruitment

  • Review incoming applications and conduct 1st round interviews for Site Coordinator, Summer Director, the National Office Intern, and VISTA positions
  • Assist Program Managers and Director of Programs in hiring decisions
  • Attend national and local Career Fairs to recruit potential candidates
  • Update and manage position descriptions on AmeriCorps and other critical recruitment websites
  • Research and implement an effective national recruitment strategy to diversify applicant pool and increase NSP’s name recognition on college campuses
  • Provide motivational support to regional staff via birthday cards and care packages

Training and Event Planning

  • Spearhead organization, logistics, and planning of Annual Leadership Summit, Early Service Training, and other ongoing training and celebration events throughout the year
  • Conduct and compile volunteer and Site Coordinator surveys to assess strength and weaknesses of training events
  • Advertise and acquire sponsors for the Annual Leadership Summit and ongoing trainings
  • Organize and send weekly digests to local offices to communicate important updates from the National Office

Evaluation and Strategic Development:

  • Manage and troubleshoot online database systems
  • Evaluate and report monthly progress of Local Offices
  • Participate in Local Office planning sessions to set quantitative goals for client service
  • Create presentations on NSP indicators of success for the NSP Board of Directors and potential foundation and corporation donors
  • Manage implementation and analysis of reporting earmarks such as the Student Experience Survey and the Client Satisfaction Survey
  • Serve as mentor for the National Student Advisory Board

  • Education Award/Stipend: Upon completion of the year of service, Program Associates will be eligible to receive a $4,725 education award at the end of each year of service ($9,450 over the two years), which may be used to pay back qualified student loans or for future education, as long as he/she has not previously received AmeriCorps education awards.
  • Housing: Program Associates will receive a $200 monthly housing stipend from NSP.
  • Health Care: The Corporation for National Service provides health care benefits for Program Associates.
  • Other Benefits: As long as the Program Associate has not previously served as an AmeriCorps Member, he/she is eligible to receive loan forbearance on qualified student loans during his/her term of service.

We seek out individuals who are passionate about community development and believe that young people armed with ingenuity and dedication can fight poverty in their surrounding communities.

NSP Site Coordinators must demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to take on challenging management scenarios. They must possess excellent interpersonal skills to drive collaboration with low-income residents, community leaders, and NSP national office staff.

Since 1998, over 75 recent graduates have served as NSP Site Coordinators through AmeriCorps and have helped lead over 3,000 dedicated college students nationwide to translate NSP's founding vision into action by building a network of community resource centers that have affected the lives of over 15,000 impoverished families.

The Communications Associate must demonstrate creativity, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and impeccable writing skills.

Responsibilities Will Include the Following:

  • Spearhead the growth of NSP's national communications and media outreach program
  • Write articles, choose photos, edit layout and text, and work with designers on production of NSP newsletters, brochures, press packets, and annual report
  • Update publication timelines and streamline procedures
  • Research appropriate media outlets and reporters to pursue
  • Draft and edit press materials, maintain media lists, and approve final copy
  • Edit Local Office communications materials
  • Propose models of and opportunities for media relations building

Regional Program Manager: Full-time Staff Member

Organization Description

The mission of National Student Partnerships (NSP) is to direct the energy and innovation of young people toward ensuring that all community members have access to the services, opportunities, and attention that they need to pursue employment, self-sufficiency, and personal success. Since 1998, NSP has expanded its presence to 12 Local Offices in 11 cities, drawn over 3,000 student volunteers from over 40 leading partner universities into community service and civic engagement, and helped more than 20,000 low-income individuals and their families navigate the complex social services terrain. 

As a first step in its long-term expansion plan, NSP is poised to deepen its involvement in communities across the nation. Beginning in July 2008, NSP will focus its operations and growth aspirations in five major regions: Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, New York metro area, and Washington, DC metro area. Currently, each of NSP’s 12 Local Offices is supported by a Program Manager working from NSP’s National Office in Washington, DC, however, starting in May 2008, an increasingly regionalized organizational model will place the Program Managers out in the field. This transition will allow Program Managers to better understand local issues, forge relationships with key stakeholders in the community, build strong partnerships with universities and colleges, and explore the potential of expanding to new neighborhoods and communities. NSP is currently recruiting for Regional Program Managers in the Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia regions.

Position Description

NSP’s Regional Program Managers are responsible for supervising the operations of 2-3 NSP Local Offices. Program Managers are expected to play a hands-on role in the development of each NSP Local Office by overseeing office operations, managing NSP AmeriCorps*National Direct staff members and local university student volunteers, supervising and supporting client service, and utilizing internal systems and processes. Program Managers will be based in one of the Local Offices they support and are expected to travel to the other offices under their purview on a regular basis. The Regional Program Managers are members of the NSP Program Team and report directly to the Director of Programs, based in the National Office in Washington, DC.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Local Office and Staff Management
    • Provide oversight, support, training, and direction to Site Coordinators and student volunteers with special attention to local volunteer management, training, and service delivery.
    • Provide intensive consultation on client service and community outreach. 
    • Ensure safety and security policy and procedures are being followed.
    • With the support of NSP’s National Office, maintain, or in some cases establish, office infrastructure and provide ongoing oversight of Local Office finances and operations.
    • Support student recruitment efforts at college and university campuses.
  • Strategy, Evaluation, and Reporting
    • Work with Local Offices to set annual goals that are in line with NSP’s strategic growth plan and are both ambitious and attainable.
    • Drive superior performance against programmatic goals for each site individually and for the region cluster.
    • Oversee reporting functions of Local Offices, compile monthly and quarterly status reports.
  • Development and Communications
    • Establish and strengthen partnerships with key community partners.
    • With support from the National Office, engage key stakeholders and help grow a sustainable, diversified local funding base.
  • Training
    • Help to strategically inform the content of and potentially facilitate national (typically held 3x/year in Washington, DC) and local training sessions.
    • Support the development and review of training and technical assistance resource materials.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Commitment to NSP’s mission and core values.
  • Candidates are required to have a Masters in Social Work, Counseling, or associated field.  Licensure in social work (LSW,) or counseling (LPC) is preferred, and licensure eligibility is required. 
  • 2-3 years professional experience preferred, but not required.
  • Individuals with a background in direct service, policy work, or the service communities of the Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia areas will be given special consideration.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in the start-up environment of a fast-growing, entrepreneurial organization. This involves flexibility, creativity, ability to take initiative, and a commitment to being a team player.
  • Solid management skills including the ability to make difficult decisions and convey complicated and/or difficult information in a clear manner.
  • Ability to work remotely.
  • Willingness to travel and to work some weekends and evenings.

Summer Director /AmeriCorps*National Direct Member - Full Time

  • Training: NSP National Office will provide all NSP Summer Directors with a paid Summer Director Training Conference held in Washington, DC, during the first week of June.
  • Living Allowance: NSP Summer Directors will be given a living stipend of $ 2,400.

Fall, Spring and Summer Internship Opportunities in Washington, DC - Part Time/Full Time

National Student Partnerships (NSP) is currently seeking motivated undergraduate and/or graduate students to serve as Program and Development-Communications Interns in our National Office in Washington, DC . NSP desires candidates who have the following qualifications: strong writing, organization, and computer skills (fluency in Excel is a plus); are willing to take initiative; can work independently as well as part of team; and have previous volunteer experience. NSP offers a supportive and fun office environment, where interns will gain valuable non-profit experience.

Responsibilities Will Include the Following:

  • Maintain NSP's Resource Guide with current national and local policies and legislation affecting low-income communities
  • Assist in compilation of national and local monthly reports
  • Research local community and national trends in issues of non- profit effectiveness and compare to NSP performance, creating excel spreadsheets, graphs, and charts when needed
  • Monitor and update NSP's internal WIKI, NSPedia, our resource sharing database
  • Help coordinate annual February leadership conference and annual June Site Coordinator and Summer Director trainings (i.e. purchase flights, write and send logistical e-mail updates to attendees, and help coordinate logistics during conference /training)
  • Assist with administrative duties: faxing, copying, organizing Program Office and files, and errands
  • Opportunity to volunteer in the DC Local Office
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Research foundation and corporate funding leads
  • Maintain organized and informative foundation and corporate records to ensure smooth operation of daily office functions
  • Assist in research and writing of grant proposals
  • Help monitor and maintain NSP website
  • Produce NSP brochures and press packets
  • Write press releases and media advisories
  • Document NSP's past press clippings
  • Generate revenue reports
  • Write donor acknowledgement letters
  • Enter donors' information into donor database
  • Assist with administrative duties: collating and mailing solicitations, faxing, copying, and errands
  • Plan and execute event logistics
  • Opportunity to volunteer in local DC office
  • Other duties as assigned

Fall/Spring Internship Details-Part-Time/ Full Time

Summer Internship Details-Full Time

  • All interested students (undergrad and grad) are welcome to apply.
  • National Office internships run from late May until late July/early August in Washington, DC. Preference will be given to those who can begin in early to mid-May.
  • Interns are full-time staff members and work from 10am-6pm. Variations in this schedule due to events and/or trainings will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Interns may have the opportunity to travel to some of our Local Offices across the country, and if interested, to work directly with clients and volunteers in NSP's Washington, DC Local Office on a regular basis.
  • Unpaid
  • Interns will also have the opportunity to shape the internship toward their individual background and personal interests as applied to the concepts of the organization.
