2007 Program Year Highlights

  • Continuing on their growth trajectory, NSP-Bronx saw an increase in total clients served and total client meetings held of more than 30% from PY ‘06. With the addition of a new room in their current location, NSP-Bronx was able to add two computer stations, enabling more clients and volunteers to meet at the office.
  • In addition to the physical growth in their office space, the NSP-Bronx leadership changed tremendously this year. The Bronx now engages three student Local Directors and three student managers to oversee various projects and tasks within their local office. It is this tiered structure that has enabled the office to tackle new projects, engage more volunteers, and take the office to new heights. Leadership projects include a Client Successes Board, a Volunteer Faces Board, in-office volunteer projects, organized outreach efforts and Community Partnership days to engage volunteers with local organizations and partners.

Office Snapshot

Founding
NSP-Bronx was founded in September 1999 by Deanna Singh (Fordham University, ’01) with the help of strong Local Director leadership under Katia Amaya, Kate Janeski, and Mary Slosar. NSP-Bronx has become an established presence in the heart of the Fordham-Bedford neighborhood, one of New York's most vibrant immigrant communities.

Its home, the Refuge House, was previously a convent and now serves as a community multi-service center operated by Fordham-Bedford Children's Services. In an effort to remain responsive to the needs of the community it serves, NSP-Bronx's leadership established the priority of having at least one Spanish-speaking volunteer available at all times during office hours, and directed volunteer outreach efforts toward reaching and maintaining that goal.

Volunteers
Volunteers for the NSP-Bronx office come from Fordham University, Manhattan College, and Monroe College. Current volunteers average about six hours of week in the office.

Partners
NSP-Bronx has many vital community partnerships including Fordham Bedford Children's Services, P.O.T.S., Dress for Success, Grace Institute, AARP, Manpower, Fortune Society, Citizen's Advice Bureau, Bronx Adult Learning Center, and the Bronx Educational Opportunity (an adult program of the State University of New York).
