Office Snapshot

Founding
NSP-Richmond was founded in 1999 by University of Richmond students Steven DuMont and Farheen Khurrum with the ongoing help of Strategies to Elevate People and the Calhoun Family Investment Center. NSP-Richmond began its year serving clients out of its office at Gilpin Court, a low-income housing community. At the end of 2001, Local Directors began discussions with the staff of the Richmond Career Advancement Center (RCAC), a designated Department of Labor One-Stop Center, about sharing space in RCAC. In February 2002, NSP-Richmond moved into RCAC, making it the second NSP office to be located in a Department of Labor One-Stop Center, as well as a groundbreaking collaboration for both organizations. In 2008, NSP-Richmond relocated to the Daily Planet. The Daily Planet's case management services for homeless individuals in Richmond has provided a complementary environment for NSP's holistic approach toward client service.

Volunteers
The NSP-Richmond office is fully staffed by students from Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Richmond who serve three to 14 hours per week.

Partners
NSP-Richmond focuses on forming relationships with partners around the community. Over the years, NSP-Richmond has partnered with the Richmond Career Advancement Center, the Richmond Workforce Investment Board, the University of Richmond Bonner Scholars Program, Senior Connections, Central Intake, and the Richmond Tax Coalition.

NSP is also an internship site for graduate students at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. NSP Currently hosts two MSW interns who dedicate 14 hours a week to NSP.

National Student Partnerships would like to thank the Verizon Foundation for its two-year partnership with NSP-Richmond. The Verizon Foundation's commitment to workforce development has allowed NSP to significantly enhance its services to low-income community members in the Richmond area.
